A case has been filed against Dhaka Club President Shamim Hossain and three others over allegations of withholding a former employee’s dues and threatening to kill him.
The other accused are Director of Finance Tuhin Reza, CEO and Secretary Lt Col Sabbir Ahmed (retd), and Chief Financial Officer Iqbal Hossain.
Former club employee Ashik Molla filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman on Tuesday.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter, saying the court recorded Ashik’s statement, took cognisance of the complaint and summoned the accused to appear on September 29.
According to the case statement, Ashik joined Dhaka Club as an attendant on November 23, 2017, and was made permanent on August 19, 2018. He was suspended on January 26 this year for allegedly violating service rules and dismissed on July 27 after six months of suspension.
Ashik claims he was owed Tk 490,000 in service benefits, provident fund, gratuity, notice pay and unpaid wages. As the club failed to pay his dues, he applied for mediation under Section 124(A)(5) of the Bangladesh Labour Act at the office of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments.
However, the accused allegedly failed to appear at the mediation despite receiving notices, following which the labour inspector issued Ashik a written clearance certificate.
On August 15, Ashik went to the club and was allegedly given a cheque for Tk 116,981, while the accused refused to pay the remaining Tk 373,019.
The case further alleges that the accused threatened to kill Ashik if he continued demanding the outstanding amount.
