The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday showed Major (retd) Mozzafar Hossain, an accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman, arrested in crimes against humanity case over atrocities allegedly committed in Feni during the July mass uprising. The tribunal also granted investigators two days to interrogate him.
A three-member bench of ICT-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order following a prosecution petition.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam appeared for the prosecution and sought permission to show Mozzafar arrested in the case, allow a two-day interrogation, and extend the deadline for submitting the investigation report.
After the hearing, the tribunal granted the prosecution's petition, formally showing Mozzafar arrested in the case and authorising investigators to interrogate him for two days at a time convenient to the investigation agency. The tribunal also fixed September 23 for the submission of the investigation report.
Mozzafar was produced before the tribunal earlier in the day and will remain in custody at the Dhaka Cantonment prison.
Lieutenant General (Retd.) Masud Uddin Chowdhury, another accused in the same case, was also produced before the tribunal.
According to the prosecution, evidence collected during the investigation suggests Mozzafar's involvement in various crimes against humanity during the Awami League government's tenure. Prosecutors alleged that he maintained regular communication with Masud Uddin Chowdhury during the killings in Feni amid the July mass uprising, leading to the application to show him arrested in the case.
On July 21, the prosecution sought a production warrant for Mozzafar, one of the accused in the Ziaur Rahman assassination case. After evading arrest for nearly 45 years, he was apprehended from a residence in Dhaka's Banani area on the night of July 15 and handed over to the Military Police at Dhaka Cantonment the following day.
