A Dhaka court has sent a man to jail in connection with the death of Soheli Islam Soma, a sales officer at a pharmaceutical company, who died after falling from a rickshaw during a snatching incident.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order against Abir Hossain Nayan on Wednesday after the investigation officer moved a petition seeking his detention, said SI Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution division.

The incident occurred in the early hours of June 7, when Soma was returning to Dhaka with her daughter after spending the Eid holidays in Parbatipur, Dinajpur. After getting off a bus, they were heading towards Central Road on a battery-powered rickshaw.

Police said that while the rickshaw was passing in front of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, motorcycle-borne snatchers allegedly grabbed Soma’s handbag. She fell onto the road and her head hit a road divider, leaving her critically injured.

She was first taken to a hospital and later shifted to Anwar Khan Modern Hospital, where she died on the morning of June 11.

Following the incident, Soma’s maternal uncle Nazmul Moula Liton filed a case on June 13. Police later arrested Nayan, and a court granted a three-day remand the following day.

After the remand, investigation officer SI Mirajul Islam of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station produced Nayan before the court on Wednesday, seeking his continued custody.

Defense lawyer SM Moniruzzaman (Tarek) filed a bail petition, requesting deferment of the hearing until Thursday.

The court, however, sent Nayan to jail and fixed Thursday for the bail hearing.
