A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to content creator AM Hasan Nasim in a case filed over allegations of spreading misleading information about Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam granted bail to the accused on a bond of Tk1,000 after hearing the defense petition. Inspector Moktar Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
Nasim was arrested on Friday around 8pm from a house in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital. The following day, the court rejected both remand and bail petitions, sent him to jail, and set Tuesday for the bail hearing.
According to the case statement, on April 11 around 11:30pm, complainant Md Nazrul Islam, while at his residence in Gulshan, saw a Facebook post allegedly intended to blackmail Nurul Islam Moni, Member of Parliament from Barguna-2 and chief whip of parliament.
The statement said the same Facebook account continued to publish misleading information at different times. It also alleged that an unidentified accused sent various screenshots via WhatsApp to the personal number of Nurul Islam Moni, attempting to blackmail him for financial gain.
Following the incident, Nazrul Islam, an associate of the chief whip, filed a case at Gulshan Police Station under the Cyber Security Ordinance.
