A Dhaka court has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old boy in the capital’s Kafrul area, bringing closure to a case that has spanned nearly two decades.

Judge Munshi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 passed the order on Sunday morning.

The convicts, Al Amin Gharami and Masud Rana, were each sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 100,000. In default of payment, they will serve an additional year of simple imprisonment.

In the same case, Saiful Islam, also known as “Chhoto Saiful,” was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Two other accused, Md Abdul Motaleb (alias Mota) and Amirul Islam (alias Rubel), were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Masud Rana was present in court at the time of the verdict and was sent to jail following the pronouncement. Arrest warrants and conviction orders have been issued against the two absconding convicts.

State prosecutor Md Ershad Alam (George) confirmed the details of the judgment.

According to case documents, the victim, Shafiqul Islam Milon, went missing from North Senpara in Kafrul on the afternoon of March 6, 2008. When the ransom demanded by the abductors was not paid, they strangled the boy to death and dumped his body in the Ramchandrapur area of Savar on March 8.

The victim’s father, Shahidul Islam, filed the case shortly after the incident. Police submitted a charge sheet against five accused on May 23, 2008. After an 18-year trial involving testimonies from nine witnesses and DNA evidence, the court delivered its verdict.
