The International Crimes Tribunal has set April 22 as the next date for recording testimony against Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan in a crimes against humanity case involving allegations of enforced disappearances and killings during the Awami League regime.
The date was fixed on Thursday by a two-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumder, chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-1, after the examination of the third witness concluded.
Defence counsel Aminul Gani Tito cross-examined the third witness, Munni Akhter, and claimed that she had given false testimony before the tribunal.
In her testimony, Munni Akhter said her husband, Nazrul Islam, was killed after being disappeared, allegedly by Ziaul Ahsan. Her statement was recorded on April 8, and the cross-examination, which began that day, concluded on Thursday after being adjourned earlier.
Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam appeared for the prosecution, while prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim, Sheikh Mahdi and others were present during the proceedings.
Ziaul, the sole accused in the case, was produced before the tribunal from prison in a prison van.
On January 14, Tribunal-1 ordered the trial to begin after framing three charges against him.
According to the charges, Ziaul Ahsan was involved in the killing of Sajal and three others on the night of July 11, 2011, in Pubail under Gazipur Sadar police station.
Another charge relates to incidents between 2010 and 2013, during which around 50 people, including Nazrul Islam and Mallick, were allegedly killed near the Baleshwar River in Charduani Khalghensa area of Patharghata upazila in Barguna.
The third charge also involves allegations of killing around 50 people.
