A Dhaka court on Monday placed three people on a seven-day remand in connection with the murder of Swechhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir in Tejturi Bazar, Karwan Bazar, the capital. A fourth accused gave a confessional statement before a separate court.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam ordered the remand for Billal, Riaz (32) and Abdul Qadir (28) following a request by the investigation officer. Meanwhile, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque recorded the confession of Jinnat (24).
Inspector Muhammad Aminul Islam of the DB Police’s Tejgaon Zone, the investigating officer of the case, said the accused were arrested after reviewing video footage, and efforts were underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi told the court that Musabbir, 44, had spent 17 years in custody on political cases and was only recently released before being shot. Another man, Sufian Bepari Masud (40), was also shot and is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
“The killing of Musabbir, who leaves behind three young children, has shocked people across the country,” Faruqi said. He added that the prime suspect, Rahim, remains at large, while Rahim and his brother Billal allegedly carried out the murder together.
During proceedings, accused Riaz claimed he was not present at the scene, saying, “I was at work that day. I know nothing. I have been arrested without any reason.”
The shooting occurred around 8:30pm last Thursday in an alley beside Hotel Super Star in West Tejturi Bazar. Musabbir and Masud were shot, and Musabbir was declared dead at a local hospital.
Following the incident, Musabbir’s wife, Suraiya Begum, filed a murder case at Tejgaon Police Station against four to five unidentified people. Police later conducted raids across Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Mymensingh, and Netrakona, arresting Jinnat, Billal, Abdul Qadir, and Riaz. Authorities recovered a motorcycle without a number plate and Tk 6,000 in cash from the accused.
