High Court orders restoration of Pabna-1, Pabna-2 constituency boundaries

The writ petition challenging the legality of the delimitation was filed on September 16

The High Court on Thursday declared the recent delimitation of Pabna-1 and Pabna-2 constituencies illegal and ordered the publication of a gazette restoring their previous boundaries ahead of the national parliamentary elections.

The verdict was delivered by a High Court bench comprising Justice Faiz Ahmed and Justice Md Manjur Alam, making the earlier rule on the matter absolute.

Barrister HM Sanjid Siddiqui represented the petitioner during the hearing.

The writ petition challenging the legality of the delimitation was filed on September 16, following the Election Commission’s decision to finalise and publish a gazette redefining the boundaries of all 300 parliamentary constituencies on September 4.

Since the publication of the gazette, residents of several affected constituencies across the country, including Pabna, have staged protests opposing the revised boundaries.

According to the Election Commission’s gazette, Pabna-1 was redefined to include Santhia Upazila, Bera Municipality, and the union parishads of Haturia Nakalia, Notun Bharenga, Chakla, and Kaitola.

Meanwhile, Pabna-2 was formed with the remaining areas of Bera Upazila, excluding Sujanagar Upazila as well as Bera Municipality and the five aforementioned union parishads.
