A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking the formation of a high-powered judicial commission to investigate the brutal murder of scrap dealer Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, in front of Mitford Hospital in the capital.

The petition also requested directives for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators directly involved in the killing.

Lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ on Sunday with the relevant branch of the High Court.

He told media that the petition was presented before the High Court bench comprising Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Aynun Nahar Siddiqua.

The writ is scheduled for hearing on Monday.

Sohang, 39, was killed in a gruesome attack last Wednesday in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka. According to eyewitness accounts, he was lured to the spot, beaten, and struck repeatedly with bricks and stones, resulting in severe injuries to his head and body. He was also stripped, and some of the attackers were seen jumping on his body.

In response to the incident, the BNP has expelled five leaders and activists from its affiliated bodies—Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal—on charges of involvement in the killing.

A case was filed over the murder on Thursday at Kotwali police station by the victim’s sister, Manjuara Begum, 42.

The case names 19 accused and includes 15 to 20 unidentified individuals.

So far, police have arrested five suspects in connection with the case: Titon Gazi, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, Tarek Rahman Robin, Alamgir, and Monir alias Chhoto Monir.
