Nearly a decade after the murder of Italian national Cesare Tavella in Dhaka’s Gulshan area, a Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment while acquitting four others.
Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Shamidul Islam delivered the long-awaited verdict on Thursday afternoon in the case filed over Tavella’s killing.
Tavella, who was an official of ICCO-BD, a Netherlands-based international organization, was gunned down in September 2015, sparking widespread concern both domestically and internationally.
Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, and Minhajul Arefin alias Bhagne Russell.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted the remaining four accused due to a lack of evidence.
