A Dhaka court on Sunday convicted and sentenced a man, Mizan Sardar, to death for murdering his wife, Rupa Akter, by pouring hot oil on her while she was asleep.
The incident took place in 2023 in the Kadamtali Khalpar area of the city.
Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the judgment in the presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.
The court also fined Mizan, son of Awal Sardar from Baburhat village under Nazirpur police station in Pirojpur, Tk1 lakh.
According to case documents, Rupa and Mizan were married in 2013 and had two children.
Mizan frequently physically abused Rupa while demanding dowry.
To protect his daughter from Mizan’s cruelty, Rupa’s father gave him a piece of land and a shop.
On May 6, 2023, Mizan tortured Rupa again, demanding more dowry.
Around 3am, while Rupa and her two children were asleep, Mizan heated some cooking oil in a frying pan and poured it on Rupa.
The building’s caretaker heard Rupa’s screams, rescued her and the children, and rushed them to the Burn Unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Rupa succumbed to her injuries on May 25.
Before her death, Rupa made a dying declaration before Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Muzahidul Islam on May 14.
The accused, Mizan, also gave a confessional statement in court.
