A tribunal sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in Matuail, Jatrabari, Dhaka, in 2017.
Judge Rokshana Begum Happy of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 3 delivered the verdict on Thursday.
State lawyer Md Sajjad Hossain Sabuj said: "Rafiqul Islam was in jail. He was presented before the tribunal before the verdict was announced. After the verdict, he was taken to jail with a sentence warrant."
According to the case statement, seven-year-old child Zaria Akhter went from her room to the bathroom at around 6am on October 1, 2017. When she did not return even by 6:30 am, her family members started looking for her. Later, the police recovered Zaria's body from Rafiqul's room.
The next day, the police arrested Rafiqul. Later, it was learned that Rafiqul killed the child after raping her.
The police investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet to the court. Then, the trial began after framing charges. After completing the judicial proceedings, the court announced the verdict.
