A tribunal has sentenced a man named Ziaur Rahman, 35, to death for raping and murdering a teenage girl in the Dohar area of Dhaka seven years ago.
In addition to the death sentence, he has been fined Tk200,000.
The tribunal has ordered the Dhaka District Magistrate to recover the fine from the convict’s movable or immovable property and compensate the victim’s family.
The verdict was announced on Tuesday by Judge Munshi Md Moshiyar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4.
As the convict is absconding, the court has also issued an arrest warrant and a sentencing warrant against him, confirmed state prosecutor Ershad Alam.
Ziaur Rahman, the convicted offender, is the son of Sheikh Sona Mia from Banaghata village in the Dohar area of Dhaka.
According to the case details, on October 21, 2018, at around 9am, the girl went to collect vegetables from a nearby field. On her way back, Ziaur Rahman forcibly took her to a nearby bush, raped her, and then slit her throat with a sharp weapon. Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a case at Dohar police station.
On March 12, 2019, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Syed Mehedi Hasan of the concerned police station, submitted a charge sheet against Ziaur Rahman.
The court then framed charges and initiated the trial. During the proceedings, the tribunal recorded statements from 18 witnesses before delivering the verdict.
