A Dhaka court sentenced Arshad, 22, to life imprisonment for the rape of a seven-year-old child in the Dakshin Keraniganj police station area of Dhaka.
Judge Munshi Md Moshier Rahman of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict on Monday.
In addition to the life sentence, the convict has been fined Tk100,000.
Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one-year imprisonment.
The tribunal further ordered that the fine be collected by selling the convict's movable or immovable assets and be provided as compensation to the victim and her family.
At the time of the verdict, the convict was presented before the court from prison.
Following the pronouncement, he was sent back to prison under a warrant, as confirmed by State Prosecutor Ershad Alam George.
According to the case details, on September 2, 2014, at around 12:30pm, the accused lured the victim by asking her to buy cigarettes and shampoo from a nearby shop.
Upon her return, he took her to an isolated room near Mobarak’s house in Abdullahpur, under the jurisdiction of Dakshin Keraniganj police station, where he raped her.
The victim later informed her mother about the incident.
She was initially treated at Mitford Hospital and subsequently at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On September 5, 2014, a case was filed at the Dakshin Keraniganj police station regarding the incident.
Sub-Inspector Md Hamidul Islam of the concerned police station conducted the investigation and on November 16 of the same year, submitted a charge sheet under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
The court later framed charges and commenced the trial.
During the proceedings, testimonies from ten witnesses were recorded before the final verdict was delivered.
