A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, and their children in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities related to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) requested the ban, citing concerns over the possible embezzlement of a substantial amount of funds.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Tuesday following an application by ACC Deputy Director Monirul Islam.
The individuals affected by the order include Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, Sheikh Rehana’s daughters Tulip Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq, and her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq.
According to the ACC’s petition, an investigation is underway into allegations of misappropriation of around Tk59,000 crore in the name of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
A five-member team has been assigned to probe the matter.
The petition further claimed that there were reports suggesting the individuals named in the allegations might attempt to leave the country, which could hinder the investigation.
