A Dhaka court on Monday placed the former inspector general of police (IGP), Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, on a 3-day remand in connection with the murder of pedestrian Md Masudur Rahman Joni during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The incident occurred in front of the Jatrabari Police Station in the capital during the protests in July.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the remand order following a hearing.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case and CID Police Inspector Sikdar Mohitul Alam had presented Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in court and requested a 10-day remand.
The prosecution lawyer argued in favor of the remand, citing ongoing investigations. On the other hand, the defense lawyer contended that the former IGP had already been remanded for 75 days and had provided all necessary information, urging the court to cancel the remand. After considering the arguments, the court decided to grant a 3-day remand.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was arrested on September 3, and following multiple remand periods, the court ordered another remand for further investigation.
According to the details of the case, on August 5, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Md Masudur Rahman Joni, 40, was shot by police and activists of Awami League's affiliate organizations while returning home to Demra from his workplace.
The incident occurred in front of the Chaurasta area of the Jatrabari Police Station. Joni was rushed to Mitford Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors on August 12 after several days of treatment. Subsequently, a murder case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station on August 29.
