Former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor lands in jail

Earlier, detectives detained Sitangshu Kumar at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport

A court on Tuesday sent Sitangshu Kumar Sur Chowdhury, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for failing to submit his wealth statement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order following an ACC petition.

Earlier, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hussain filed the petition seeking the defendant’s detention. However, no defence lawyer submitted a bail plea on behalf of the accused. After the hearing, the judge ordered that he be sent to jail.

The petition said Sitangshu Kumar was issued a notice to submit a detailed statement of his and his dependents' movable and immovable assets, sources of income, and related acquisition details, following allegations of possessing wealth beyond known sources of income.

It added that he received the order and asset declaration form in person on October 27 last year. However, he failed to submit the statement within the stipulated 21 working days, by November 25. Consequently, the ACC filed a case against him, which is currently under investigation.

The ACC petition further argued that granting bail could lead the defendant to abscond, influence witnesses, and hinder the investigation process.

Earlier in the day, Sitangshu Kumar was apprehended by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
