A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to death in the murder case of Ismail Hossain Zisan, a student of the European University of Bangladesh, who was killed five and a half years ago.

On Sunday, Dhaka’s Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Farzana Yasmin announced the verdict.

The convicted are Hasibul Hossain alias Hasib, Shraban alias Shaon, and Abdullah Al Noman.

Another accused, Sajoni Akter, was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Additional Public Prosecutor Shariful Islam Liton said: “Shaon is on the run, and the court has issued both a conviction warrant and an arrest warrant against him.

“The other two accused were brought to court from jail, and after the verdict, they were sent back to prison with the conviction warrant.”

Zisan, who worked as a motorcycle ride-share driver alongside his studies, went missing from Shyamoli on May 12, 2019, around 4:30pm.

His father, Sabbir Hossain Sahid, filed a general diary (GD) with Gachha police station in Gazipur and later another GD with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.

On May 23, 2019, Zisan’s bound body was recovered from the safety tank of Hasibul Hossain’s house in Madhya Kamar Juri area under the Gachha police station.

Sabbir Hossain filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on the same day.

After an investigation, Sub-Inspector Sujanur Islam of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station submitted a charge sheet against four individuals on January 12, 2020.

On March 30, 2022, charges were framed against the four, and the trial commenced. The court took testimonies from 18 out of 25 witnesses before delivering the verdict on Sunday.
