A Chittagong court has rejected the bail plea of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote and a former Iskcon leader, in a sedition case.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam issued the order after a hearing on Thursday.
During the bail hearing, 11 Supreme Court lawyers represented Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the matter.
Meanwhile, there was a significant presence of law enforcement agencies around the court premises during the bail hearing.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) AAM Humayun Kabir said: "The bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das took place today. Police, BGB, and army personnel were deployed around the court premises. No untoward incidents occurred."
On October 31, Firoz Khan, general secretary of the BNP Mohra Ward under Chandgaon Police Station, filed a sedition case at Kotwali Police Station against Chinmoy Krishna Das and 18 others.
Chinmoy is currently in prison in connection with this case.
On November 25, Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested at Dhaka Airport.
The following day, on November 26, the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate of Chittagong, Kazi Shariful Islam, rejected his bail and ordered his imprisonment.
After the order, his supporters protested around the court premises, surrounding the prison van.
This led to clashes with the police.
During the unrest, the protesters caused widespread chaos in and around the court premises.
They brutally attacked and killed lawyer Saiful Islam Alif on the Rangam Convention Hall road.
The police identified the attackers using video footage.
Seven cases, including one for murder, were filed over these incidents.
