A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former minister Hasanul Haq Inu in connection with the murder of one Monir Hossain during an anti-discrimination student protest.
The case, filed at Gulshan police station, alleges that Monir was shot while crossing the road amidst the protest, leading to his death.
On Monday, the investigation officer, Abu Zafar Biswas, a sub-inspector of the Gulshan Zone of the Detective Branch (DB), presented Inu in court and requested a 10-day remand for the sake of a proper investigation. On the other hand, the defendant's lawyers argued for the cancellation of the remand. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of the remand. After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman granted a four-day remand for the accused.
During the hearing, Inu's lawyers told the court that Hasanul Haq Inu had been accused and the remand was sought to harass him for political reasons. They requested the court to deny the remand and suggested questioning him at the jail gate if necessary.
On the other hand, the public prosecutor said that Inu is a named accused in the case. He further alleged that under the instigation of leaders like Inu from the 14-party alliance, Sheikh Hasina orchestrated such a large-scale massacre. Hence, he requested the remand.
According to the case documents, on July 19, Monir, while crossing the road to return home during a movement on Pragati Sarani in the Gulshan area, was shot. Later, Monir was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Subsequently, on September 30, the deceased's father, Md Abu Zafar, filed a murder case at Gulshan Police Station, naming Sheikh Hasina and 105 others as accused. An additional 200-300 unidentified individuals were also accused in the case.
