Hasnat-Sarjis motorcade hit: Truck driver, assistant remanded

The truck hit the car in Chittagong on November 27 while it was returning from the funeral prayers of murdered lawyer Saiful Islam Alif

A Dhaka court has placed the driver of the truck that hit a car in the motorcade of Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, along with his assistant, on a two-day remand.

Chittagong Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahmudul Haque passed the order.

The accused are truck driver Mojibur Rahman, 40, and his son Rifat Mia, 18, who works as his assistant. They are residents of Trishal upazila of Mymensingh.

Police arrested them soon after the incident and also seized the truck.

Muhammad Shah Jahan, the lawyer for the plaintiff, said: "Lohagara police applied for a five-day remand of the arrested driver and helper in this case. After the hearing, the court granted a two-day remand for each of them."

Habibur Rahman, a court inspector, said a case was filed under the Road Transport Act for hitting a car in Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinators Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam’s motorcade in Lohagara.”

The front of the car was damaged. However, no one was injured. The accident occurred on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway at Haji Road junction in Chunati union.

Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police station, said: “Ahmed Newaz, who was in the car, filed a case with Lohagara police station on the night of the incident. The driver and helper of the truck were arrested in connection with the case. They are currently in jail.”
