A heated confrontation took place between the lawyers of the plaintiff and defence during the bail hearing of former Planning Minister MA Mannan in the court of Senior District and Sessions Judge Hemayet Uddin on Wednesday morning.
The argument erupted at around 10:30am, when defence lawyers attempted to initiate the bail hearing.
The plaintiff's lawyers objected, arguing that the hearing date had been scheduled unusually quickly, adding that they were not prepared for the hearing.
This sparked a heated exchange between both sides, prompting the judge to leave the courtroom and retire to his chamber.
Later, the court rescheduled the bail hearing for 2:30pm.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Masuk Alam, said: “On Tuesday, the lower court rejected MA Mannan’s bail request. Later that afternoon, a misc case was filed in the court of Senior District and Sessions Judge Hemayet Uddin, who then scheduled the bail hearing for today.”
Defence lawyer Shafiqul Islam refuted the claims, saying: “There was no irregularity in the scheduling of the date. It was set normally. It was the plaintiff’s lawyers who caused a disruption in court, which led to the commotion. The court has now set the hearing for 2:30pm on Wednesday.”
The plaintiff’s lawyer Abdul Haq further accused state prosecutors of siding with the defence, which he argued obstructed the course of justice.
He added: “The scheduling of the case was indeed unusual, and the plaintiff’s lawyers were unprepared for the bail hearing, leading to their opposition.”
