Former planning minister MA Mannan's bail plea was rejected by Judge Nirjan Kumar Mitra of the speedy trial court.

The order was issued after hearing the arguments from both sides in Mannan’s absence at 11am on Monday.

The courtroom was packed with lawyers representing both the plaintiff and the accused during the hearing.

Advocate Abdul Haque said that MA Mannan was a key figure against the general student movement in Sunamganj. He alleged that under Mannan's plan, numerous mega projects were implemented in the country, including in Sunamganj, where corruption and irregularities were rampant.

The advocate called for a fair trial through an impartial investigation.

Mannan was arrested from his home in Shantiganj upazila, Sunamganj, at around 10:30pm on Thursday and was brought to Sunamganj Sadar police station. The following morning, he was presented before the court at 10:30am and sent to jail.

A case was filed at the Sadar Model police station on September 2 regarding the attack on students during the student-public movement in Sunamganj on August 4. The case, filed under the Speedy Trial Act by Hafiz Ahmad, a resident of Doarabazar upazila, accused 99 people, including MA Mannan. The plaintiff claimed that his brother, Zahoor Ahmad, a student, was injured in the attack.
