6 DU students give confessional statement over lynching Tofazzal

After recording their statements, the accused were sent to jail

Six students of Dhaka University, who were arrested in connection with lynching Tofazzal Hossain inside Fazlul Huq Muslim hall on Wednesday, confessed to their involvement in the crime before a magistrate on Friday.

The arrestees are Muhammad Jalal Mia of physics department, Suman Mia of soil, water and environment; Mottakin Shakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science; Ahsanullah of mathematics; Al Hussain Sajjad and Wajibul Alam of geography and environment departments.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain recorded confessional statements of the six in connection with the murder case after police produced them at his chamber.

After recording their statements, the magistrate also sent the accused students to jail.

Police on Thursday arrested six students, including two former Chhatra League leader, in connection with the incident that led to Tofazzal’s death.

DU authority filed a case with Shahbagh police station in connection with the murder.

Tofazzal from Barisal, on suspicion of being a thief, was lynched by the students of Dhaka University on Wednesday night.

Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

Witnesses said that students caught Tofazzal around 8:30-9pm, suspecting him of theft. He was beaten multiple times in the hall's guestroom until 10pm.

At one point, he was even fed at the university canteen before being assaulted again. His condition worsened after prolonged interrogation, and he was taken to the hospital around midnight, where he was pronounced dead.

After the incident went viral on social media, it was later revealed that Tofazzal had mental health conditions. He entered the hall unintentionally.

Following his death, students demanded justice, organizing protests and a rally at the Raju Sculpture.

The country rattled in shock and burst into anger on Thursday after Tofazzal, who had mental health conditions died of torture for hours by some students inside the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University, suspecting him to be a mobile thief.
