A court has ordered that Mizanur Rahman, director of Rongdhonu Group and former vice-chairman of Rupganj Upazila, be sent to jail after completing his remand in a case filed with Khilkhet Police Station in Dhaka, alleging extortion.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain on Friday following a hearing.
After the two-day remand, Khilkhet Police Inspector Md Ashiqur Rahman Dewan, the investigating officer, presented the accused in court and requested that he be kept in jail.
The police also applied to show Mizanur Rahman as arrested in another murder case filed with Vatara police station.
Lawyers representing the accused argued for bail, while the prosecution opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the request to show the accused as arrested in the Vatara case and ordered his transfer to jail.
Mizanur Rahman was arrested on Tuesday from the Vatara area in Dhaka, and on Wednesday, the court had granted a two-day remand.
On April 30, Mahbub Rahman Midhu filed a case at Khilkhet Police Station, naming eight people, including Rafiqul Islam of Rongdhonu Group, with Mizanur being the fourth accused in the case.
According to the case details, on April 28, at around 11:30pm, under the direction of Rafiqul Islam, a group of armed individuals unlawfully entered the property of East West Property Development Limited and City Multi Agricultural Company. When three security guards on the property tried to stop them, the accused assaulted them.
The case also stated that one of the accused, Kawsar Ahmed Opu, snatched and destroyed a mobile phone.
The assailants threatened the security guards, claiming ownership of the property and demanding that their boss pay a ransom of Tk5 crore to retain control of the land.
They further threatened that if the ransom was not paid, they would return with more people to seize the property, kill anyone who resisted, and hide the bodies. The vandalism and theft caused a loss of Tk200,000 to the company.
