Former public administration minister Farhad Hossain has been sent to jail in connection with the murder of Rubel, a garment worker from Adabar, Dhaka.
The court ordered his detention after rejecting his bail plea on Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ragib Noor issued the order following a hearing, during which the investigating officer, Inspector Abdul Malek of Adabar police station, requested that Farhad Hossain be remanded in custody.
After four days of remand, Farhad was produced in court, where his lawyer sought bail, which was opposed by the state prosecutor. The court then rejected the bail request and ordered his imprisonment.
Farhad Hossain was arrested on the night of September 14 from Dhaka’s Eskaton area. On September 15, the court granted a four-day remand for further investigation.
According to the case details, Rubel was shot during a student protest on August 5 in the Ring Road area under Adabar police station. The protest, which took place around 11am, was part of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Police and members of several Awami League-affiliated groups, including Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, Tanti League, and others, allegedly opened fire on the protesters. Rubel was fatally wounded and later declared dead at a nearby hospital.
Rubel's father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case at Adabar police station on August 22.
Among the accused are former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former parliamentarian and cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, actor Ferdous, and Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon.
