Update : 10 Aug 2024, 02:12 PM

Army personnel are asking all protesters to leave the area around the High Court after Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan announced his resignation Saturday evening.

They urged everyone to leave the area after 1:15pm on Saturday.

During this time, members of the army through loudspeakers said you (protesters) are protesting for the sake of fair justice. The chief justice has announced his resignation. Please move away from this place. A mishap could occur in such a crowd, damaging the courthouse and hindering your protest.

On Saturday, protesting students took position on the Supreme Court premises, issuing an ultimatum to Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and other judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1pm.

BNP and pro-Jamaat lawyers are also protesting with the same demand. In response to the situation, the army has been deployed to protect the Supreme Court.

Later, army personnel were stationed in the main building, annex building, and other areas around the Supreme Court.

They urged the protesters to maintain a peaceful stance and called on them to avoid wasting government resources.

On Saturday, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan had called a full court meeting, involving all judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court, but later announced its adjournment.

The protesting students have referred to this full court meeting as a "judiciary coup."

In response, they announced a program to besiege the High Court.

Later, Hasnat Abdullah, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, issued an ultimatum for the resignation of the Appellate Division judges, including the chief justice.

Around 11am on the High Court premises, Abdullah declared: "If you do not resign, we will surround the residences of the chief justice and the other party judges and force them to resign."
