A Dhaka court has granted bail to BNP leader Giasuddin Al Mamun in a case filed over embezzlement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order on Tuesday.
ACC court inspector Amir Hossain confirmed the bail.
Helal Uddin, lawyer for Giasuddin Al Mamun, said his client had been in jail longer than his convictions. “I am going to Kashimpur jail. Hopefully, he will be released shortly.”
Mamun, a close business associate of BNP’s Tarique Rahman, was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Tk12 crore.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted a charge sheet over Mamun for siphoning off £4,18,853 to the UK.
Mamum was arrested on January 31, 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government’s term, and has been in jail since then.
There are various cases against him which include extortion, corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.
