A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent BNP Vice Chairman and former minister Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed to jail in connection with a sabotage case filed at Gulshan police station.

Major Hafiz returned home last Sunday after undergoing two and a half months of treatment in Delhi, India. The BNP leader had knee surgery at Delhi's Fortis Hospital.

Surrendering to the court on Tuesday, the BNP leader applied for bail. However, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury rejected the bail petition filed and sent him to jail.

This development comes after the same court sentenced Major Hafiz to 21 months imprisonment on December 28, 2023.

According to case files, on June 4, 2011, the accused attacked and obstructed the police's work on the road in Mohakhali under Gulshan police station. They vandalized and set fire to cars passing on the road.

After an investigation, Gulshan police station Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan Talukdar filed a chargesheet in the court on April 29, 2014. Subsequently, on April 25, 2022, charges were framed against the accused.
