The High Court on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to form a high-power committee to investigate the increase in the prices of potatoes, onions, eggs and other agricultural products.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order following a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer in the public interest.
The secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and the department of agriculture concerned were asked to respond to the order.
The court also issued a ruling asking why the inaction and failure of the defendants to prevent the increase in the price of agricultural products would not be declared illegal.
Supreme Court lawyer Manoj Kumar Bhowmik filed the writ based on a report published in a national daily on December 26 over the price increase of potatoes by Tk15 per kg.
