A Dhaka Court on Wednesday granted bail to BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a case filed with Paltan police station for sabotage.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque granted their bail on Tk10,000 bond after hearing of their bail petitions.

On behalf of the accused, Lawyers Mohsin Mia, Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah submitted the bail petitions.

Lawyers said there were no specific charges against them. They prayed for bail on the grounds that they are elderly and sick.

After hearing both sides, the court granted their bail.

Following violence and clashes centring on BNP's rally on October 28, detectives picked up BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from his home in Gulshan at night.

Law enforcement officially arrested him around nine hours later.

Afterwards, a Dhaka court rejected his bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail in a case filed over an attack on the chief justice's home allegedly by BNP activists. The BNP leader has been in jail since then.

Meanwhile, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained Khasru at his residence in Gulshan in the early hours of November 3.

Later that day, a court in Dhaka granted the police six days to question him in custody in a case filed over the killing of Constable Amirul Islam Parvez. He was sent to jail after the end of the remand period.

Both the BNP leaders are facing multiple cases filed on different charges.
