Zahir Ahmed Ratan, the managing director (MD) of the much-talked-about Nurjahan Group, has been shown arrested in three cases.

Judge Mujahid Ur Rahman of Chittagong Financial Debt Court gave this order after the hearing on Tuesday.

The matter was confirmed by the bench assistant of Chittagong loan court Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury.

He said: “Ratan was ordered to be arrested in six money loan issuance cases filed by Agrani Bank on the charge of default. On the other hand, his lawyers applied for his bail. After the hearing, the court denied the bail request and ordered him to be arrested in three cases. Zahir Ahmed Ratan has defaulted on loans of at least Tk6,500 crore from various banks. There were arrest warrants against him in 61 cases in different police stations.”

On December 28, 2023, police arrested Ratan from the capital’s Badda area.

SM Obaidul Hoque, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station in Chittagong, confirmed the information, adding that the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has 26 Complaint Register Case (CR Case) sentences and 35 CR arrest warrants in Kotwali, Panchlaish, Pahartali and Khulshi police stations against Ratan, in a total of 61 cases.

Ratan had a consumer goods business in Khatunganj, the port city. He took these loans in 2011 and 2012. However, he did not pay back the amounts taken from several banks, including Agrani Bank, Janata Bank, Commerce Bank, and South East Bank.

According to sources, there are at least 20 cases filed against him. The court issued an arrest warrant against Zahir and put restrictions on his departure from the country.
