A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in nine cases filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Sohagh Uddin granted his bail petitions in the cases on Tk10,000 bond.
Fakhrul’s lawyer Zainul Abedin Mejbah confirmed the matter.
However, as Fakhrul has been shown arrested in two more sabotage cases filed with Ramna and Paltan Model police stations, he will not be freed from jail yet.
Earlier on Tuesday, the court accepted the petition to show Fakhrul arrested in the cases.
On December 31, 2023, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim set January 9 for hearing the bail petitions of Fakhrul in nine separate cases filed with Ramna and Paltan police stations.
At least 11 cases were filed against Fakhrul in connection with the October 28 grand rally of BNP.
Of these, eight were filed with Paltan Police Station and three with Ramna Police Station.
On October 29, police filed a case with Ramna Police Station on charges of vandalism and attack on the Chief Justice’s residence during the BNP rally on October 28.
Apart from Mirza Fakhrul, 59 BNP leaders and activists, including standing committee member Mirza Abbas, were accused in the case.
Fakhrul was arrested in the case on October 29 and has been in jail since then.
Meanwhile, the High Court on Wednesday rejected a bail petition of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed over vandalizing the chief justice's residence on October 28 during the party's grand rally.
The bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after hearing a rule on the issue.
