The bail petitions for BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in nine cases related to political violence during the BNP's rally on October 28 are scheduled to be heard by a Dhaka court on January 9.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury set the date after Fakhrul's legal counsel, Syed Jainul Abedin Mesbah, requested his official arrest in the cases and sought bail.

Following a writ petition challenging the magistrate court's refusal to accept the bail petitions, the High Court, on December 18, directed the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka to accept, hear, and dispose of Fakhrul's bail petitions in the nine cases.

The charges in these cases, filed at Paltan and Ramna police stations, include the killing of a police constable, illegal street gathering, vandalism of vehicles and rioting.

Fakhrul was arrested on October 29 in a case filed at Ramna police station related to an attack on the chief justice's residence during a clash with police on October 28.
