A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former lieutenant general Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy on eight-day remand in a case filed with Paltan police station over his connection with Mian Arefy, fake "advisor" of US President Joe Biden.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order as police produced Hasan Sarwardy before the court and pleaded to place him on 10-day remand in the case.
On Tuesday, detective branch (DB) of police arrested Hasan Sarwardy, who allegedly prompted Bangladeshi US national Mian Zahidul Islam Arefy to address a BNP press briefing identifying himself as a so-called "adviser" to US President Joe Biden.
Earlier, a Gopalganj resident named Mohiuddin Shikder filed the case against Arefy, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain and Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Sarwardy, on Monday with Paltan Model Police Station.
In the case, police arrested Mian Arefy from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday as he was trying to depart Bangladesh. He is now behind the bar.
According to the case statement, on Saturday evening , Sarwardy escorted Arefy to the BNP's central Nayapaltan office where he spoke before a group of reporters alongside party activists, identifying him as a close Biden advisor and "member of (US) national democratic committee".
