Obaidul Hassan becomes new chief justice

Justice Obaidul Hassan, a senior judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed as the 24th chief justice of Bangladesh.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment on Tuesday in line with Article 95(1) of the constitution.

The Article 95 (1) says: "The chief justice shall be appointed by the president, and the other judges shall be appointed by the president after consultation with the chief justice."

Earlier, Justice Obaidul Hassan was assigned as acting chief justice for eight days from September 11 to September 18 as the then Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was out of the country.

Obaidul Hassan was enrolled as a lawyer in the District Court in 1986, the High Court Division in 1988 and the Appellate Division in 2005. On June 30, 2009, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division and on June 6, 2011 as a permanent judge.
