Cox’s Bazar tourist rape: Three men remanded for two days

Police sought 5-day remand for the accused

A Cox's Bazar court has granted the police two days to interrogate three people arrested over the gang-rape of a woman in the beach city last week.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Alamgir Mohammad Farooqi passed the order on Monday afternoon.

Confirming the matter, Mohammad Mohiuddin, additional superintendent of police, said a five-day remand was sought for each.

The remandees are Rezaul Karim Shahabuddin, 25, of South Baharchhara area of the city, Mamunur Rashid, 28, of Chakaria upazila, and Mehedi Hasan, 21, of West Baharchhara area.

A total of five people have been arrested in the case, filed against seven. The main accused in the case, Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, was arrested in Madaripur on Sunday.

Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested another accused Riaz Uddin, manager of Hotel Zia Guest Inn. On Saturday, the court put him on a four-day remand.

According to the case, the victim was raped on December 22 in a shack near Kabita Chattar in the city. She was later taken to the hotel where the accused raped her in the second phase.

The woman’s husband filed the case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Cox's Bazar Sadar Model police station accusing seven people.
