A Rajshahi court has handed down death penalty to two accused for brutally killing a farmer eight years ago.
On Monday, the court of Rajshahi Second Special Sessions Judge Akbar Ali Sheikh delivered the verdict when the convicts -- Mofiz Uddin and Fuljan Bibi -- were in the dock.
The court also fined the convicts Tk50,000 each. Another person believed to be involved in the killing was acquitted by the court, said prosecutor Asaduzzaman Mithu.
Fuljan Bibi, wife of Deraj Mistri, was involved in an extramarital affair with Mofiz Uddin. One day, the victim, Nurunnabi saw them together. On that day, Mofiz had threatened to kill Nurunnabi.
Later on April 15, 2013, Fuljan and Mofiz planned the murder and asked Nurunnabi to meet them. Following an altercation between the two men, Fuljan gave Mofiz a sharp weapon, which he used to slash Nurunnabi's neck. The victim’s head was severed.
After putting the victim's body into a bag, the duo separated the head in order to make it appear as if someone had killed Nurunnabi for body parts.
However, they left a trail of blood from the house to where they left the bag. Locals called police and the convicts, including Fuljan's husband and son, were arrested.
The victim’s brother filed a case against the four with Durgapur police station.
