The case accusing prominent Bangladeshi band “Meghdol” for hurting religious sentiments has been withdrawn.
Plaintiff Imrul Hasan moved the court on November 2 to drop the charges, when Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Moinul Islam accepted the petition.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Monday, Hasan, a lawyer, cited “personal reasons” for withdrawing the case.
On October 28, Advocate Hasan filed the case after having taken issue with the band’s lyrics for their song “Om,” in which he alleged that Meghdol distorted the essence of Muslim prayer “Labbaik Allah Humma Labbaik” by incorporating modern musical instruments in their performance.
The same court then ordered the police to probe after Hasan, who sued Baul singer Rita Dewan on similar charges, filed the complaint.
The plaintiff said in his complaint that he watched on YouTube the band’s October 22 performance from “Concert against Violence,” at Dhaka University, where the band members “drunkenly” and “disrespectfully” sang the verse “Labbaik Allah humma labbaik” with their musical instruments.
Meghdol was founded in 2002 and officially began its journey with the release of “Om” in 2005. The band drew widespread praise with the release of their subsequent albums.
In February last year, Imrul Hasan sued Baul singer Rita Dewan and two others under the Digital Security Act on similar charges— hurting religious sensitivities.
Arrest warrants were out for Rita, who later secured bail. The Dhaka Cyber Tribunal recently indicted the three for making "derogatory comments" about religion and hurting people's sentiment during a performance.
The two others are Md Shahjahan and Md Iqbal Hossain.
According to the case documents, Rita Dewan was performing a "Pala Gaan" with fellow artiste Shah Alam Sarkar, where the topic being debated was "Living Beings versus The Greatest". The event was held on the night of December 10, 2019 at the residence of one Shahjahan Kabir in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila.
Shahjahan and Iqbal had uploaded Rita's songs to their YouTube channels, the case documents said.
