Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque indicted in rape case

Update : 03 Nov 2021, 05:39 PM

A Narayanganj court has framed charges against former Hefazat-e-Islam joint secretary general Mamunul Haque in a rape case filed by a woman he had falsely claimed was his second wife.

District and Sessions Judge Anisur Rahman indicated Mamunul, who was present in court, after a hearing on Wednesday, said court police’s Inspector Asaduzzaman.

Mamunul was later taken to Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur under tight security.

State counsel Rakibuddin Ahmed said preliminary evidence of rape has been found in line with the plaintiff’s complaint and the charge sheet, leading to the indictment.

Ahmed added that the court also fixed November 14 for the next hearing, during which witness testimonies will be presented and the accused will be questioned.

Jannat Ara Jharna, whom Mamunul had claimed to be his second wife, filed the case against the Hefazat leader on April 30 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj.

In the case statement, she alleged that Mamunul raped her many times over the past two years by promising to marry her.

Locals found Mamunul along with Jharna at a resort in Sonargaon on April 3. Although Mamunul claimed she was his second wife, she did not mention so in the case.

According to the case dockets, Jharna got acquainted with the Hefazat leader in 2005 as he was a close friend of her former husband, Maulana Shahidul Islam. She said she and Shahidul had been leading a happy life before they met Mamunul.

Mamunul used to visit the couple's house frequently and played different tricks to make their marital life toxic, she claimed, adding that they got divorced on August 10, 2018, being provoked by Mamunul’s evil counsel.

After the divorce, Mamunul allegedly tricked her into coming to Dhaka.

"At one stage, he began a physical relationship with me, with the promise of marriage," Jharna alleged in the statement.

In the last two years, Mamunul allegedly took her to different hotels and resorts in and around Dhaka to spend time together — all with the promise of marriage.

"When I talked about marriage, he would waste my time giving me assurances," she said.

On April 3, Mamunul took her to a Sonargaon resort and raped her there once again, Jharna alleged.

Sonargaon police station Inspector and case investigation officer Safikul Islam had submitted the charge sheet against Mamunul in court on September 10.
