A Dhaka Court on Tuesday sent former convener of Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad Hasan Al Mamun to jail in a case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student..
Judge Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddique of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 passed the order after rejecting his bail petition in the case.
Earlier in the day, Hasan Al Mamun surrendered before the tribunal and submitted the bail petition.
On June 14, police filed charges against Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad Joint Convener Nazmul Hasan Sohag and former convener Hasan Al Mamun in the case.
Later, police recommended that four people, including former vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Nurul Haque Nur, be discharged.
On September 21 last year, a female student of Dhaka University filed the case against six people, including Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur, with Lalbagh Police Station.
According to case dockets, prime accused Hasan Al Mamun raped the victim with promises of marriage on January 3, last year.
Mamun, a former DU student, and the victim had been in a romantic relationship since July 2018, read the case statement.
The victim was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with the help of Shohag, one of the six accused in the rape case, on January 12.
The victim said she tried to contact her friends and DU correspondents for media outlets, but Shohag obstructed her from doing so under Mamun’s instructions.
“In the meantime, Mamun agreed to marry me as I kept insisting on it, later he started ignoring me,” she alleged in the case statement.
On February 9, Shohag called her to the Sadarghat area to resolve the matter. She and Shohag had breakfast in a restaurant there.
Shohag then took her to Chandpur after tempting her, but Mamun did not show up. She demanded that she be returned to Dhaka immediately.
On their way back, Shohag raped her in the launch cabin, she said.
