Child rapist sentenced to life after 23 years in Chittagong

A Chittagong court on Sunday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a six-year-old child 23 years ago.
The convict was identified as Shariful Islam, son of Fazlur Rahman, from the Lalapur area under Gomastapur police station in Chapainawabganj district.
Judge Begum Ferdous Ara of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 in Chittagong handed down the verdict, confirmed Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Public Prosecutor Khandaker Ariful Alam.
On September 29 of 1998, Shariful Islam, a resident of the Panchlaish police station area in the city, lured a six-year-old child to his house and raped her. The same day, the child's father filed a case with Panchlaish police station.
Following an investigation, Panchlaish police submitted a chargesheet to the court on December 24, 1998.
Shariful was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 6 (1) of the Women and Children (Special Provisions) Act, 1995 based on testimonies from four people. The convict was present during the delivery of the verdict.
