Rangpur Incident: Teenager who posted Facebook status confesses

The teenager who posted the status that reportedly sparked the arson attacks in Rangpur has made a confessional statement under Section 164 in a Rangpur court.

Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Fazle Elahi recorded the statement on Tuesday evening.

The teenager confessed before the court that he had made a defamatory post on Facebook about "Kaaba Sharif", Court CSI Sub Inspector Shahidul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.

Police escorted the teenager to court under strict security at around 4pm on Tuesday after he voluntarily agreed to make a confessional statement in court. After his statement was made in the evening, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.

Earlier on Monday night, he was arrested from Panchbibi, Joypurhat in the case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA).

Pirganj police station Sub-Inspector Ismail Hossain filed the case on Tuesday morning.

On Sunday night, shops and temples belonging to members of the Hindu community were set on fire by a mob in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. Around 30 locals were injured at the time.

Police said tensions erupted after some people alleged that a Hindu man had posted religiously abusive content on Facebook.

On Tuesday, a Rangpur court sent 38 accused to prison in a case filed over the assault, vandalism and arson attacks on homes, shops and temples belonging to members of the Hindu community in the upazila.

The attacks took place after communal violence spread to 20 districts in the past few days, ignited by allegations that the Quran had been "dishonoured" at a Hindu temple during Durga Puja in Comilla.

At least six people have been killed during attacks in Chandpur, Chittagong, Noakhali, Feni and other areas.
