All the cases were filed in 2021

The High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Mamunul Haque, former joint secretary general of the Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, in five separate cases filed with Paltan and Chittagong's Hathazari police.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Aminul Islam passed the order after separate petitions were filed by Mamunul's legal counsel, Advocate Helal Uddin Molla.

All the cases were filed in 2021.

Deputy Attorney General Shaheen Ahmed Khan represented the state in the court.

But there are more cases against him, so he is not being released now, said his lawyer.

He also said that 41 cases were filed against the former Hefajat leader. Mamunul earlier secured bail in 12 cases.

Of the 41 cases—four were filed at Motijheel police station, nine with Paltan, three with Sonargaon, three with Siddhirganj, eight with Hathazari, one each with Khulna Sonadanga, Comilla Chandina, Bhatara and Mohammadpur, five with Darus Salam, and three with Mirpur model police station.

Besides, two more cases were filed at Dhaka Special Tribunal.

At least 17 people were killed during violence in Chittagong's Hathazari and Brahmanbari following clashes in Dhaka's Baitul Mukarram on March 26, 2021.

Earlier on 18 April, 2021, Mamunul Haque was arrested at Jamia Rahmania Madrasa in Dhaka's Mohammadpur area.

On April 3, 2021, Mamunul Haque was held by Awami League activists for staying with an unknown woman at Sonargaon Royal Resort in Narayanganj.

Later, activists and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam came and vandalized the resort and took him away.

On April 30, the woman filed a rape case against Mamunul Haque at Sonargaon police station.

However, Mamunul Haque later claimed that the woman was his second wife.

Mamunul Haque came to the discussion several times after Hefazat's mayhem in the capital in May, 2013.
