A Kushtia court on Sunday sentenced truck driver Badsha Sheikh, 39, to two years in prison in case of running over school student to death.
Judge Md Tajul Islam of Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Court announced the verdict in the afternoon. This is the first time in Kushtia that a court sentenced a driver to prison under the Road Transport Act.
According to the source of the case, on February 25, 2021, Amir Hamza, 13, an eighth grader of Kaburhat High School was riding a bicycle when a Khajanagar-bound truck from Batoil hit her on his way to Kaburhat market. Later, locals quickly rescued her from the spot and took her to Kushtia General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the girl dead.
The victim's father Sohel Rana filed a case under the Road Transport Act 2018 at the Kushtia Model police station. The investigating officer of the case, Sub Inspector (SI) Sheikh Md Mehdi Hasan, completed the investigation and filed the charge sheet in the court on March 31, 2021, accusing the truck driver Badsha Sheikh. After the testimony, the court announced the verdict on Sunday.
Kushtia court's Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Anup Kumar Nandi said that the court ordered the driver Badshah Sheikh to serve two years in prison in the case of a school student being crushed to death by a truck. At the same time, he was fined Tk1,50,000.
