The High Court on Thursday ordered to hold the trial of two charges in the gang rape case of a young woman at Sylhet's MC College hostel in 2020 in a speedy trial tribunal.

At the same time, the court also directed the government to publish a gazette in this regard within the next 30 days.

The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Ahmed Sohail passed the order after hearing of a writ filed in this regard.

The writ was filed on August 1.

According to the case statement, a group of young men tied up a man and raped his then 19-year-old wife at a dormitory of MC College on September 25, 2020.

After police rescued the couple, the rape survivor's husband filed a case with Shahporan police station against nine people, mentioning the names of six and three to four unnamed men.

On September 30, 2020, the High Court formed an investigation committee to look into the incident.

On December 3, 2020, police pressed charges against eight accused.

According to the police, they found direct involvement of six people in the rape while two assisted in the crime.

The accused who were directly involved in the crime were Saifur Rahman, Shah Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Tariqul Islam Tarek, Arjun Laskar, Mohammad Ainuddin alias Ainul and Misbaul Islam Rajon.

Rabiul Islam Hasan and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum were accused of assisting them.

The eight also happen to be activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League. They are behind bars now.

All of the accused gave their confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after they were remanded.

On January 17, 2021, a Sylhet tribunal framed charges against all the accused in the case filed over the incident.
