The High Court has directed authorities concerned to close all illegal brick kilns in four districts of the northern region of Bangladesh within seven days.

The court also issued a rule asking why the inaction of the defendants in closing down all illegal brick kilns in Bogra, Tangail, Lalmonirhat, and Thakurgaon districts should not be declared illegal.

The High Court bench consisting Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam. and Justice Md. Shohrowardi passed the order on Monday.

The court has also directed the authorities, including the secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the director general of the Department of Environment, DCs, and SPs of the four districts to submit a report of compliance with the order within four weeks.

In this regard, senior lawyer Manzil Morshed said that no brick kiln can be set up and operated without a license as per the Brick Kiln Establishment (Control) Act.

“Despite this law, several newspapers reported that illegal brick kilns were starting operations in some districts ahead of the winter months,” he added.
