Eight people were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Dhaka on Tuesday for the murder of a tenth-grader in the Pallabi area of Dhaka in 2014.
Judge Tahsin Iftekhar of the Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka delivered the verdict.
The convicts – Md Faisal, Md Ashikur Rahman, Md Rassel, Md Oli Miah, Md Saddam Hossain, Rabbi alias Chotu, Md Imran Hossain and Md Rashidul Alam – were present in court at the time.
Two others – Shahinur Begum and Nannu Miah – were acquitted by the court as the charges against them had not been proven.
Mehedi Hasan, 16, a student of Mirpur Bangla High School, was found dead on the first floor of an under-construction building close to his Pallabi home in September 2014.
His father, Mosharraf Hossain, filed a case at Pallabi police station.
On June 12, 2017, the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) Inspector Moksedur Rahman, the investigating officer, submitted a chargesheet.
According to the case statement, the eight beat his son to death because he had spoken out against their drug trade.
After the verdict, Additional Public Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Paul expressed his satisfaction saying that justice had been served.
