A Kushtia court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape of a minor girl in 2018.
The court also fined him Tk1 lakh, in default of which he will have to stay one more year in jail.
Judge Syed Habibul Islam of Kushtia Women and Children Repression Prevention handed down the sentence in presence of the convict, Jony, 34.
Convict Jony is the son of Hafizul Pramanik of Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.
According to court sources, Jony raped the second-grader in a tobacco field while she was cutting grass with her friends on March 12, 2018. The child’s father filed a case with Daulatpur police station accusing Jony.
Shariful Islam, sub-inspector (SI) of Daulatpur police station filed a charge sheet against Jony, the only accused involved in child rape, on March 18, 2019.
Kushtia court’s public prosecutor (PP) advocate Abdul Halim said: “The charges brought against the convict in the child rape case have been proved beyond doubt. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of Tk1 lakh, in default of which he will have to stay one more year in jail.”
