A Manikganj court on Thursday sentenced a man to life in prison for the murder of his wife in 2011.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Utpal Bhattacharja pronounced the verdict in absence of the accused, Rezaul Mandal, around 1:30pm.
He was also given two months’ imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Tk10,000.
The judge ordered the arrest of the convict.
Rezaul used to run a tea shop at Aricha ferry terminal. The deceased housewife was identified as Sahela Akhter.
According to the case, Rezaul called and asked Saleha Akhter to meet him at midnight on October 1, 2011 about an extramarital affair. They had a quarrel, following which Rezaul strangled Saleha and fled.
Ismail Hossain, brother of the deceased, filed a murder case against Rezaul with Shibalaya police station the next day.
Sub-Inspector Mostafizur Rahman, also the investigating officer, filed the charge sheet on February 28, 2012. Thirteen out of 19 witnesses gave testimonies in the case.
APP Niranjan Basak and defense counsel Sakhawat Hossain Khan handled the case.
